5.2 Directories

The name of a directory follows the same rules as a general file. However, several filenames are reserved:

• /: the slash symbol by itself, or as the beginning of a path represents the root directory.
• .: a single period represents the current working directory.
• ..: two consecutive periods represents the parent of the current working directory.
